OUR MISSION STATEMENT
The Pacific Logging Congress mission is to fulfill the need to provide sound technical education about the forest industry. Founded in 1909 the Pacific Logging Congress has sought to educate politicians, educators, their students and the general public about the need for sound responsible forestry to supply global needs for wood fiber.

“THE UNIFIED VOICE OF THE WESTERN LOGGING INDUSTRY”

HISTORY and ROLE of THE PACIFIC LOGGING CONGRESS

The Pacific Logging Congress is an association of representatives from the logging side of the forest industry in the western United States and British Columbia. Typical members are managers and owners of logging companies; lumber mills or forest products companies; manufacturers and dealers of equipment used in the logging industry. The organization has over 250 company memberships, but attracts non-members to many of its programs. Historically, PLC was a combined equipment show and convention where the newest logging equipment and supplies were exhibited. Meetings were held with educational and informational presentations about the logging industry from safety to logging techniques to political activities were heard.

Today, PLC has a strong priority on educating students, teachers and the public about timber harvesting and forestry. It produced a video, brochure and exhibit booth, which has been displayed at teacher science fairs and industry conferences around the West. The present “IT TAKES A TREE” program consists of a full color, 32-page brochure about forestry and logging and an accompanying 17- minute video. Two versions are available, United States and British Columbia. It also includes a professional 10’x 20’ exhibit booth that is regularly the nicest exhibit at these shows. PLC has handed out its brochure and video to over 19,000 science teachers in the west. The teachers really like what they see and asked us to investigate new technology teaching resources and lesson plans. We listened to their requests and looked for cutting edge technology that could comply with teaching curriculums and accepted by school management. We learned that Interactive Training Media, Inc. had produced their FORESTS FOREVER interpretive CD-ROM series for student groups grade 4-7 in many states. The PLC and Washington Contract Loggers worked with Educators and Forestry Professionals to write the scripts and carefully edit all material to assure interesting, accurate, current and unbiased information. This ITM, CD-ROM program meets many of the prescribed learning outcomes and provides balance to the existing curriculum.

PLC holds an annual convention or Congress. The planning starts two years ahead by the 2nd vice president who will become the overseeing President. Nominations and Elections are from the board of directors and representatives from the nine logging associations affiliated with PLC. Every fourth year the President is nominated from the Allied Industries. Conventions are held in a variety of locations; Alaska cruise, Portland, San Diego, Reno, Las Vegas, Hawaii and Vancouver, BC. You are invited to visit our web site for more information on future PLC convention dates contact Rikki Wellman, 425-413-2808, P.O. Box 1281, Maple Valley, WA 98038.

PLC has hosted four very successful IN THE WOODS live logging equipment shows. With our most current show held September 2001 in Portland, Oregon. A major Forest Company hosts and prepares a suitable harvesting site. Equipment manufacturers each select a seven to ten acre exhibit area of forest land and then bring their newest equipment to the site to demonstrate it working in real forest harvesting conditions. There are up to forty active operations, each with five to ten machines operating alternately. Interesting static displays and booths are near the logging site in tents. Up to 3,000 elementary school teachers and students have been transported over a two-day period, to view the safest and most environmentally advanced logging methods available. Each individual is supplied with a hard hat to wear while onsite and each group of students is guided by a knowledgeable PLC delegate. Bus transportation was paid for by donations from organizations supporting our industry. Over 5000 individuals attended the show over the four-days.

Each summer the Board of Directors meets at a destination chosen by the current president and his spouse. This gathering of people from the industry kindles many life long friendships. The PLC is seeking new member Companies or you are invited to become an individual member.
